About this Stone
This island is renowned for its natural beauty, historical significance, and cultural heritage. The most famous feature is Itsukushima Shrine, a UNESCO World Heritage Site dedicated to the deities of sea, storms, and war. Its iconic floating torii gate—which appears to hover on the water during high tide—is one of Japan’s most photographed landmarks. Mount Misen, the highest peak at 535 meters, offers panoramic views and can be reached via hiking trails or a ropeway. Also worth exploring are Senjokaku (Toyokuni Shrine), an unfinished wooden hall built by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and an adjacent five-storied pagoda, both offering glimpses into Japan’s architectural history.
