About this Stone
This grand entrance to the upper town was built in the late 16th century as part of the mighty Venetian Walls that still encircle the historic core. Walking through it feels like stepping back into the time when the Republic of Venice fortified the city to defend its mainland territories. When these walls were constructed, entire neighborhoods, churches, and even cemeteries had to be demolished to make space for the massive defensive system, completely reshaping the city’s landscape. Today, the gate welcomes visitors with sweeping views and a sense of quiet history, layered now with a playful modern secret tucked nearby—a small reminder that history and whimsy can coexist among centuries-old stone.
