Standing at the entrance to Aberdeen Harbour, this beacon of maritime history was built in 1833 by renowned engineer Robert Stevenson. Rising 37 meters tall, it has guided countless ships safely past the rocky coastline with its powerful light. The lighthouse was constructed following a tragic turning point in local history: the 1813 wreck of the whaling ship Oscar, which sank just offshore during a storm, killing 42 of the 44 men aboard. The disaster sparked a public outcry for better coastal safety, leading directly to the lighthouse's construction. Today, it stands as both a working aid to navigation and a memorial to the maritime dangers that once claimed lives in these waters.
