In the quiet Chrysostomou Smyrnis Square stands a powerful bronze statue honoring Metropolitan Chrysostomos of Smyrna, a religious leader remembered for his courage during one of the most tragic chapters of modern Greek history. The sculpture, created by renowned artist Thanasis Apartis, rises 2.8 meters tall on a 1.72-meter base, making it an imposing presence in the square. Inaugurated in the 1960s, it serves as a memorial to the Asia Minor Catastrophe of 1922, when hundreds of thousands of Greeks were forced to flee their homes in Asia Minor. Chrysostomos became a symbol of resilience and sacrifice, remembered for refusing to abandon his people during the turmoil in Smyrna. Today, the monument stands not only as a tribute to his legacy but also as a reminder of the refugee stories that shaped modern Greece.
