The Wānaka Willow, better known as That Wānaka Tree, is one of New Zealand's most photographed landmarks. It is a solitary crack willow growing directly out of the shallow waters of Lake Wānaka, with the Southern Alps as its backdrop. Originally, it wasn't planted as a scenic tree at all—it began life in the 1930s as a willow fence post used to contain livestock. It unexpectedly took root and grew into the iconic tree seen today. Its worldwide fame took off after a misty photograph won New Zealand Geographic Photo of the Year in 2014, and the hashtag #ThatWanakaTree became popular.
