#571 The Treasury

The Treasury, Petra, 🇯🇴 Jordan

About this Stone

Carved directly into rose-red sandstone cliffs over two thousand years ago by the Nabataeans, this iconic monument greets visitors at the end of the narrow Siq canyon with its towering forty-meter façade. Despite its name, it was most likely a royal tomb rather than a place where treasure was stored. Local Bedouins once believed an urn carved at the top of the façade contained hidden treasure, and you can still see bullet marks from attempts to break it open. Among the ancient columns and timeless desert magic, this spot represents one of the most breathtaking sights in the world—a legendary wonder that now holds a modern adventure alongside its ancient history.
