#958 Alsos of Nea Smyrni

Alsos of Nea Smyrni, Athens, 🇬🇷 Greece

About this Stone

This beloved urban park spans around 50 acres and was designed in the 1930s as a green refuge just a few kilometers south of Athens' historic center. Shaded walking paths wind through the grounds, leading past a small lake with a picturesque bridge, playgrounds, and open spaces where locals gather to escape the city's bustle. The neighborhood itself carries deep historical significance—Nea Smyrni was founded by Greek refugees fleeing Smyrna (modern-day Izmir, Turkey) following the 1922 population exchange, and the park became a symbolic gathering place for this displaced community. Today it remains a cherished spot where the rhythms of neighborhood life unfold among the trees.
