Built directly onto the mountain's stone without foundations, this fortress features a distinctive pentagonal base and ranks among Italy's oldest, with origins in the 11th century. The structure has been reinforced multiple times, most significantly rebuilt in the second half of the 15th century and covered with a sloping roof during the 16th century. Its defensive design is striking—a double wall circle with battlements and crenellated towers at the corners creates an imposing silhouette. The courtyard holds fascinating military artifacts: artillery pieces from the last war, including two mortars gifted by Victor Emmanuel II and a pair of 75mm cannons that the Guard ceremonially fires as blanks during holiday celebrations, donated by Victor Emmanuel III. Upon entry, visitors encounter the Chapel of St. Barbara, completed in 1960 and dedicated to the patron saint of artillerymen. As the most heavily reconstructed of the three towers in the group, this fortress stands as a testament to centuries of military engineering and strategic importance.
