This is a site of immense cultural and historical significance in southern India, known for its ancient temple architecture and stunning rock formations. The foundation itself is remarkable—built on a rock that's over 3.8 billion years old, older than India's Himalayas. Two ancient temples, Pillayar and Thayumanaswami, are carved directly into the stone and date back to the 7th century. Beyond its religious importance, the fort played a key role in regional wars, serving as a strategic military base for various dynasties and later the British. A climb of over 400 steps leads to the summit, where sweeping views of the city and the Kaveri River reward the effort.
