Surrounded by stone walls and offering panoramic city views, the square is often filled with tourists taking photos and soaking in the atmosphere. One striking feature is its transformation every summer into the grand stage for the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, a world-famous event featuring military bands, dancers, and performers from around the globe. The area has also hosted several significant historical moments, most notably its use as a military parade ground and site for public executions during the 17th and 18th centuries. The stone here takes advantage of the beautiful panoramic views overlooking the city, positioned away from the wall itself.
