This stunning seven-meter stainless steel sculpture in Roosevelt Square depicts a figure kneeling with broken scissors, surrounded by butterflies in flight. Created by French artist David Mesguich and installed in 2019, the work draws inspiration from the expression "to have butterflies in the stomach," exploring themes of innocence, transformation, and freedom. The deliberately non-functional scissors symbolize that nothing can harm the delicate butterflies—a poetic statement about vulnerability and safety in urban spaces. What makes the piece truly captivating is its material: nearly 2,000 mirrored facets cover the sculpture's surface, creating a shimmering, reflective quality that transforms throughout the day and becomes especially magical at sunset.
