This monument stands beside the lake in El Retiro Park, one of Madrid's most beloved destinations. Inaugurated in 1922 by King Alfonso XIII, it honors his father Alfonso XII and draws inspiration from similar royal tributes across Europe—those dedicated to Victor Manuel II in Rome and William I in Berlin. The Catalan architect José Grases Riera designed this striking sculpture-cum-landmark, which has become as much a part of the park's character as its sprawling grounds and water features.
