#182 Cathedral of Notre-Dame of Tournai

Cathedral of Notre-Dame of Tournai, Tournai, Belgium

About this stone

This cathedral represents a remarkable architectural journey spanning several centuries, blending robust Romanesque elements with more delicate Gothic features. Its most striking feature is the five prominent towers that dominate the skyline, complemented by a richly detailed interior that reflects the evolving artistic trends of medieval Europe. The contrast between the solid Romanesque nave and the later, more intricate Gothic choir tells the story of changing architectural tastes across generations. The cathedral earned its place on the UNESCO World Heritage list for good reason—it stands as a testament to the city's historical importance and artistic heritage. The surrounding city itself is one of Belgium's oldest, layered with centuries of history and folklore.
