About this stone

One of Slovakia's best-preserved castles, situated in the Malé Karpaty mountains near the settlement of Pila, this fortress gets its distinctive name from the red quartzite on which it stands. Originally constructed centuries ago, the structure was dramatically rebuilt in the 16th century into a formidable fortress equipped with one of the era's most advanced military-defensive fortification systems. The castle's imposing architecture and strategic design reflect a fascinating period of Central European history. Its remote mountain setting, combined with its robust construction and preserved state, makes it a compelling destination for those interested in medieval military engineering and Slovak heritage.
