#639 Skansin

Skansin, Tórshavn, 🇫🇴 Faroe Islands

About this Stone

This historic fortress has guarded the Faroese capital since the late 16th century, originally constructed to defend against pirate raids. Its cannons and stone walls still stand today, offering sweeping views across the harbor and out toward the island of Nólsoy. During World War II, it served as a British military base, and remnants of that era remain alongside older fortifications, blending centuries of history in one compact site. It's a place where the past meets the present, with a lighthouse standing as a landmark across the fortified grounds.
